Better Together: How Interprofessional Learning and Practice Benefits Patients

Earlier in 2025, CareQuest Institute for Oral Health invited Community Smiles Dental to collaborate and submit a use case for their new white paper, From Silos to Synergy: Integrating Oral Health into Whole Person Care Through Interprofessional Practice.

We are proud to share that our use case, written by Dr. Sidney Ebert, highlights our collaborative rotation with the Waukesha Family Practice Residency Program and was featured in the final publication. This partnership is a great example of how interprofessional education and collaboration strengthen both patient care and professional understanding across disciplines.

During the rotation, medical residents from ProHealth Care spend two weeks at Community Smiles Dental. They shadow our dental providers, participate in exams, and learn how to identify and triage oral health concerns.

As Dr. Anthony Marchlewski, MD, one of the participating residents, shared in the white paper:

“Probably the biggest advantage is being able to pull back that curtain and getting a better idea of exactly what the colleagues you’re referring people to are actually doing.”

By connecting medical and dental professionals through shared learning experiences, we are helping bridge the gap between oral and overall health. It is a key step toward providing truly whole-person care.

This collaboration reflects what is known as interprofessional practice (IPP), where multiple health professionals work together to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care. It is an approach that improves outcomes and fosters mutual respect and understanding among care teams.
